Asthma patients are less likely to acquire Covid-19, research says.

Asthma patients are less likely to acquire Covid-19, research says.

Key points:

  1.  A recent study reported that patients with asthma are less likely to get coronavirus disease (Covid-19).
  2. The researchers used data in Israel from a broad national health maintenance association.
  3. In 153 (or 6.75 per cent) subjects of the Covid-19-positive group, asthma was found, the study stated.
  4. However, researchers confirmed that asthma patients were 70 per cent less likely to die from the infection.

Research in the United States in October on asthma patients said that patients who have become diagnosed with Covid-19 do not seem to have a higher risk of hospitalization or the need for mechanical ventilation assistance relative to patients without asthma with Covid-19.

US research on Asthama patients:

A recent study reported that patients with asthma are less likely to get coronavirus disease (Covid-19). The research was published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology on November 24th.

The goal of the study was, according to researchers, to examine Covid-19 specificity in patients with bronchial asthma. The researchers used data in Israel from a broad national health maintenance association.

Included were the enrollees who were screened for COVID-19 from February to June 2020,” the study stated.”

The researchers further defined the results of the analysis and said that 37,469 subjects were tested for the Covid-19 RT-PC test, and the results were positive for 2,266 of them. This was just over six per cent of the 6.05 per cent of positive patients tested.

In 153 (or 6.75 per cent) subjects of the Covid-19-positive group, asthma was found, the study stated. “In patients with pre-existing asthma, we observed lower Covid-19 susceptibility,” said the study writers.

They, however, figured out that further research on the subject is required.

Research in the United States in October on a related population (asthma patients) said that these patients infected with Covid-19 do not seem to have a greater risk of hospitalization or need for artificial breathing assistance relative to patients without asthma with Covid-19.

The October study also reported that patients with asthma are less likely to die from the illness.

Researchers at the Boston healthcare system studied 562 Covid-19 asthma patients and 2,686 Covid-19 asthma-free patients of similar ages for the study. At equal rates, the two groups were hospitalized and had a similar needs for mechanical ventilation.

However, researchers confirmed that asthma patients were 70 per cent less likely to die from the infection. None of the 44 serious asthma patients died.
