Officials said that the reason for the blast is
still unknown as the boiler was not in operation.
On Wednesday, at a thermal
power plant in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, a boiler blast occurred. At least 6 people have died and over
17 have suffered burn injuries, making it a second blast in two months at the
power plant. The explosion took place at the power plant of NLC India
Limited, formerly known
as Neyveli Lignite
Corporation Limited in Cuddalore, 180 km away from the state’s capital, Chennai. The plant is owned by the central government.
The second incident at the same
power plant in two months:
An official at the power plant said that the boiler room was not in operation at the time of the explosion, and informed the media that an investigation is currently on to determine the reason behind it. They also said that the injured persons were immediately rushed to the hospital. Just two months back, a similar kind of explosion occurred at the same facility, where eight workers suffered burn injuries. The workers included both contractual and regular workers. The company employs around 27,000 people, including 15,000 contractual workers. NLC India generates 3940-megawatt electricity and the plant where the explosion took place accounts for 1470-megawatts.
Many deaths in lockdown at
industrial units:
In the past few months, during
the nation-wide lockdown due to the Coronavirus
pandemic, many deaths
linked to accidents at industrial units have been reported. On Monday, a gas
leak at the Visakhapatnam unit of the firm Sailor Life
Sciences killed
two people and hospitalized four workers. Another gas leak at LG Polymers
facility in Vizag
resulted in 11 deaths, including two young children, with over 1000 people
hospitalized.
Further investigations have
begun and top politicians have condemned the unfortunate explosion and Union
Home Minister Amit Shah has offered any kind of help to TN’s Chief
Minister.
