Five people died when a worker opened fire during a bank shooting in Louisville, Kentucky, and live-streamed the raid on Instagram, cops say.

The targets were aged between 40 and 64. Among nine others wounded was a rookie cop officer who graduated from the force two weeks back.

The official was fired in the head and is still critical after a brain operation.

Police answered within three minutes and fatally shot the shooter in an exchange of gunfire. The bank shooting occurred at the Old National Bank in the city centre at approximately 08:30 local time (12:30 GMT).

Caleb Goodlett told regional media that his wife, a worker at the bank, locked herself inside the vault when the attack started. Other eyewitnesses described seeing the shootout between police officials and the lone attacker.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear told an “incredible friend” of his, Tommy Elliot, a senior vice president at the bank, was among the targets. “Tommy Elliott helped me make my law career, helped me become governor, gave me guidance on being a good father,” stated Mr Beshear.

The people have all been identified:

  • Thomas Elliot, 63
  • James Tutt, 64
  • Joshua Barrick, 40
  • Julianna Farmer, 45
  • Deana Eckert, 57

The police officer who was shot in the head was recognised as Louisville Metro officer Nickolas Wilt, 26.
