Bethlehem Kudumba Unit OTT Release Wins Praise for Tamil Cinema Nods

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, this year’s highest-grossing Malayalam film, has found a fresh audience on OTT after its terrific theatrical run. Directed by Girish AD and starring Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju, the film is packed with nods to Malayalam cinema, short films and viral internet moments. Since its streaming debut, viewers have also been talking about its references to Tamil cinema, which feature familiar names such as Ajith Kumar, Trisha and Thalapathy Vijay. Fans say these moments feel like natural parts of the story rather than gimmicks.

Ajith Kumar and Trisha Moments

One of the most noticeable references comes in a sequence involving Ashley and Justin, who meet at a theatre where Ajith Kumar’s Good Bad Ugly is being screened. The scene fits naturally into the story while acknowledging the strong following that “Thala” Ajith and Tamil cinema enjoy in Kerala. The film also includes a nod to Ajith’s Mankatha, along with a reference to Trisha’s look from 96. Together, these moments create comic and relatable beats that Tamil film fans have been quick to spot and share.

A Tribute to Vijay’s Kerala Fan Base

Thalapathy Vijay gets a tribute as well. Scenes in the film highlight his popularity in Kerala, with dialogues from Sura and Bigil celebrating his fan following outside Tamil Nadu. For many viewers, these moments underline the cultural exchange between Tamil and Malayalam film audiences and show how far the actor’s films travel across state lines.

The film has been celebrated for weaving popular culture into its world without making the references feel forced. Written by Girish and Kiran Josey, it uses dialogues, viral clips and film references to bring humour to everyday conversations. With the OTT release widening its reach, audiences beyond Kerala are now picking up on these nods, adding to the buzz around a film that has already proved a box-office success. The references also give repeat viewers plenty to look out for.
