For the first time in history, Interpol has voted to postpone its 89th General Assembly (GA) scheduled for December mostly in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to the outbreak of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and pandemic-related deaths worldwide.
Among other facets of policing, the annual assembly of all 194 Member States discussed coordination on terrorism, organized crime, and criminal networks.
The Interpol executive committee decided that keeping the 89th GA somewhere in the world, this year is inadvisable and materially impractical.

The UAE authorities have worked incredibly hard to find solutions to the challenges faced by the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Jürgen Stock, Interpol’s Secretary-General. Sadly, however, the GA doesn’t need to go forward as expected.
He added: “The everyday work of assisting our 194-member countries in fighting all aspects of transnational crime and extremism remains unchanged notwithstanding the postponement of the GA.”
The new dates have not yet been confirmed for GA.
In 2022, India is slated to host Interpol’s 91st GA.
Unless the postponement would impact subsequent annual meetings has yet to be decided.
The postponement means that all other legislative issues will remain outstanding until the next session of the GA, Interpol said, in addition to the budget, which will unusually be approved by the executive committee.
This includes elections for both the Executive Committee as well as the Interpol archives of the Commission for Regulation (CCC).
After evaluating the presentations made by fugitives, the CCC is a crucial exercise for determining the cases of red notices.
For political and religious purposes, any defendant who has fled his homeland can petition Interpol on the grounds of being targeted.
