Cyclone hits the south of Brazil, killing 11 and 20 missing

Authorities alert of landslides after running several thousand flood rescues in two days in South of Brazil.

According to the state’s authorities, at least 11 people died in Brazil southern Rio Grande do Sul after an extra-tropical storm hammered the region.

The cyclone on Friday caused torrential showers, and chopper searches were conducted in flooded areas to find 20 missing others, the state of Rio Grande do Sul said.

One of the worst impacts of the storm’s trail was the town of Caraa, with around 8,000 people.

“The situation in Caraa deeply worries us. It is essential that we can, in an organised way, quickly map the main affected areas and identify the people who need support,” stated Rio Grande do Sul’s governor, Eduardo Leite, who visited the neighbourhood.

As of Friday night, Maquine, a municipality on the eastern coast, had received around a foot of rain, authorities said.

Many locals in the worst-hit regions took shelter in outdoor sports facilities in their towns. The authorities gave a warning for a chance of landslides in several places.

Leite said authorities took out 2,400 rescues in the previous two days.

“Our main objective at this first moment is to protect and save human lives. We are rescuing people who are stranded, locating missing people and supporting the families,” he stated.
