Leonardo DiCaprio was not keen to star in the epic disaster romance movie, according to director James Cameron, who discussed this in an interview with People Magazine before the 80th Golden Globes ceremony. 

He refused to play a leading man. He refused to be in the movie until I twisted his arm. He was averse to doing it. He found it to be dull. 

Only after I persuaded him that it was a challenging task did [he] accept the role. First, the fact that he’s made many sincere decisions moving forward didn’t surprise me.

Leonardo did not want to read the part or have an audition for the movie, as James Cameron had previously stated. 

James Cameron saw that the Wolf of Wall Street actor took the required reading test because it was a requirement for the role. 

The director has also stated that he does not think Titanic would have been the movie it is today without the presence of its two main actors, Leo and Kate, ahead of its 25th anniversary.

Titanic will be released in theatres on February 10 to celebrate its 25th anniversary. 

Frances Fisher, Gloria Stuart, David Warner, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Victor Garber, and Bill Paxton are among the cast members of Titanic, in addition to Leonardo and Kate, who play tragic lovers Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater. 

In advance of the occasion next month, a fresh trailer and poster for the movie have been made public. After earning $2.2 billion at the box office, Titanic is now the third-highest-grossing film.
