Diu Becomes India’s First Fully Solar-Powered District

Diu has become the first district in India to fulfill its entire power demand through solar energy, marking a significant milestone in the country’s renewable energy journey. With an installed solar capacity of 11.88 megawatts (MW), the district now meets all its daytime electricity needs solely from solar power, setting a remarkable example for other regions to follow.

Minister for New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Pralhad Joshi, highlighted Diu’s achievement during his visit on Thursday. He described the district as a national model for renewable energy adoption, praising the local administration’s efforts to transition to clean energy sources. Joshi’s visit was part of a high-level meeting convened to review the progress of solar energy projects and the implementation of the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana—a scheme aimed at providing free electricity connections to households with solar installations.

During the meeting, senior officials from the Union Territory administration presented the current status of solar energy generation in Diu, the framework for power supply, and future plans to expand solar infrastructure. The discussions underscored the importance of continuous investment and policy support to sustain and enhance renewable energy production in the district.

Joshi emphasized that the capital invested in developing renewable energy infrastructure over the last decade has been effectively recovered through the sale and supply of solar power. This financial viability showcases the economic benefits of adopting renewable energy technologies alongside environmental advantages. It also demonstrates how local administrations can achieve energy self-sufficiency while contributing to India’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change.

The success of Diu in becoming the first fully solar-powered district reflects a combination of government initiatives, technological advancements, and community participation. The PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has played a critical role in encouraging households to adopt solar energy, thereby increasing decentralized power generation and reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuel-based electricity.

Diu’s achievement serves as an inspiration for other districts and states across India to accelerate their renewable energy adoption. It highlights the feasibility of meeting substantial energy demands through sustainable sources, promoting energy security, and creating a cleaner environment for future generations.

The district’s solar power milestone aligns with India’s national mission to expand renewable energy capacity and transition towards a greener, more sustainable economy. With continued government support and innovative projects, more regions are expected to follow Diu’s lead, making renewable energy the backbone of India’s power sector.
