According to the US daily Rolling Stone, former President Donald Trump has secretly told close allies that if reelected in 2024, he intends to implement his infamous “Muslim ban.”
Trump allegedly called the policy “beautiful” and indicated enthusiasm for adding other majority-Muslim countries to the list of those barred from entering the United States.
Trump’s fixation with preventing Muslims from entering the United States dates back to his presidential campaign when he called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims who are entering the US.”
Only a few days after taking office in 2017, he signed an executive order barring citizens from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the country for 90 days.
The embargo caused disruption and uncertainty at US airports and ports of entry, resulting in a diplomatic crisis with Iraq.
Federal courts challenged the initial decree, but the Supreme Court narrowly allowed a second version of the prohibition in 2018.
President Joe Biden overturned the executive order in one of his first presidential acts.
While Trump has hinted at a renewed travel restriction in recent speeches, the notion has garnered little public examination.
While campaigning for a hypothetical 2024 presidential run, Trump has also emphasised other harsh anti-immigrant measures, such as fully securing the border and deporting illegal immigrants.
Former top Trump White House policy advisor Stephen Miller, who helped write the first Muslim ban executive order, has also advocated for a fresh ban. “Reintroduce the travel ban.”
“Right now,” Miller posted on Twitter in August. Miller and other MAGA conservatives had concentrated on Afghanistan, expressing fury when the US welcomed refugees as the nation fell to the Taliban in 2021.
Trump’s desire for a second term is not confined to tough immigration policies; he has also suggested reintroducing firing squads and mass executions, fantasising about journalists getting raped in prison, and bombing Mexico.
At CPAC, he delivered a speech announcing himself as the people’s “retribution.”
Critics of the ban have said that it is an incomprehensible policy muddle that has devastated numerous families’ lives and would add to the already chaotic legal immigration system.
It remains to be seen whether Trump’s ideas for a second ban will gain steam in his presidential campaign in 2024.
