Rahul Gandhi Opposes PM Modi’s Offshore Mining Approval

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, strongly condemning the central government’s approval of offshore mining along the coasts of Kerala, Gujarat, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The move has sparked significant opposition, particularly from local communities, environmental activists, and fisherfolk, who fear severe environmental degradation and the destruction of livelihoods.

In his letter, Gandhi criticized the government for approving offshore mining without a comprehensive environmental impact assessment. He highlighted the concerns of millions of fisherfolk whose livelihoods depend on the health of marine ecosystems. According to Gandhi, the decision could irreparably damage the coastal ecosystems, harm marine life, and disrupt the delicate balance of the oceans that sustains the livelihoods of local communities. Fishermen, in particular, have voiced their fears that the mining operations would cause irreversible harm to the marine environment, which they rely on for their daily sustenance.

“I strongly condemn the central government’s decision to permit offshore mining… Millions of fisherfolk have expressed grave concerns about its impact on their livelihood and way of life,” Gandhi stated. He emphasized that the government’s actions appeared to be made without consulting those who would be directly affected by the mining operations. In addition to the immediate environmental risks, Gandhi raised concerns about long-term consequences on biodiversity, marine resources, and the well-being of coastal communities.

The Congress leader also pointed out that the issuance of tenders for offshore mining blocks in such ecologically sensitive areas had led to widespread protests among local communities. These protests have grown in intensity as people realize the potential ramifications of such a decision on their way of life. Gandhi warned that the central government’s failure to take into account the concerns of these communities could lead to growing unrest and resentment.

In his letter, Rahul Gandhi urged Prime Minister Modi and the central government to reconsider their stance and immediately cancel the tenders for offshore mining. He called on the government to engage with the affected communities, environmental experts, and other stakeholders to explore more sustainable alternatives for economic growth that do not come at the cost of the environment and people’s livelihoods.

This development adds to the ongoing debate over the balance between economic growth and environmental conservation, with many critics of the government’s decision urging a more cautious and consultative approach. The approval of offshore mining remains a contentious issue, particularly given the significance of the coastal regions for both local economies and the environment.
