Watch video: passenger opening door during a flight in South Korea

A man has been charged for opening the emergency gate of an Asiana Airlines flight as it was approaching South Korea.

The flight had no casualties, and all 194 passengers survived, which landed safely to South Korea but with its door still open at Daegu International Airport on Friday.

Local press reported that several passengers fainted while others had breathing issues and were hospitalised.

The male, in his 30s, was detained upon landing, said Yonhap press agency.

Flight OZ8124, an Airbus A321-200 jet, departed from Jeju Island on Friday at approximately 11:45 local time (03:45 GMT). As it was approaching around an hour later, a male opened the emergency door while the plane was still 250m from the bottom.

A passenger’s clip posted on social media shows the gap in the left-hand flank of the plane and winds buffeting rows of seated persons. Witnesses told the local press that flight attendants could not control him because the aircraft was about to land.

They said the guy had even tried to jump out of the aircraft after opening the door. Individuals have described the terror on board.

“It was a mess with people near the door seeming to faint one by one and flight attendants asking out for doctors on board through broadcasting,” one 44-year-old passenger told Yonhap.

“I thought the aeroplane was blowing up. I thought I was going to die like this,” he continued.

Some school-age kids had also been on board on their way to a weekend sporting event.
