Dubai converts old shipping containers into recycling centres, diminishing the waste production

Key takeaways:

  • Dubai converts old shipping containers into 24×7, drive-through recycling hubs.
  • The move sought to decrease waste production, encouraging the culture of waste separation.

Dubai Municipality (DM) has transformed old and unused cargo shipping containers into recyclable materials collection hubs.

Dubai’s effective measure to reduce waste production:

To decrease waste production, promote a culture of waste separation, and raise recycling rates, the centre will help the civic body execute sustainable projects.

Open 24/7, the hub has been created in a way to allows People of Determination to use it without leaving their cars through the designated entrance and exit points.

Recycle containers specifications:

The new 40 cubic meter-capacity freight shipping containers were reconfigured and manufactured to satisfy the approved environmental standards. Moreover, its electricity needs will be fulfilled by solar energy.

The capability of the recycling centre is one tonne. It uses multi-coloured containers to collect as many recyclable things as possible, including paper, cartons, plastic, metals and dumped electronic devices. Remote sensors are bound to each container to follow the number of materials gathered and measure their size.

In designing the centre, DM blended with organisations in charge of delivering care for People of Determination, such as the Dubai Club for People of Determination and the Community Development Authority, to execute the project and enable them to visit and use the facility instantly.

Presently, the Municipality is bolstering its strategic partnerships with some communities and partners as part of the project’s development plan to explore ways to set up such centres in numerous locations, including education centres for People of Determination and extensive public gardens.

DM constantly seeks to execute sustainable projects and programs that maximise the use of waste, use those in various recycling programs, and convert them from landfills.
