On Thursday night, a medium-intensity earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on the Richter scale struck many areas of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), causing individuals to rush out of their homes.

In Delhi and surrounding areas for several seconds, powerful tremors were felt. At 11:46 pm, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.5km under the surface. As earthquakes of magnitude four or below hardly cause any damage, no damage to life or property has been recorded.

Delhi an epicentre of an earthquake:

These current earthquakes have sparked debate about the likelihood of increased seismicity around Delhi, and concerns of an imminent major earthquake in the near future. As Delhi has seldom been the epicentre of an earthquake, none of these apprehensions has any empirical foundation.

Even when an earthquake happens in Central Asia or the Himalayan ranges, which are seismically the most active areas, Delhi experiences quakes and an earthquake in Delhi sets the alarm because of the large population as well as high density.
