Elon Musk Weighs In on India’s Long Citizenship Process

Elon Musk recently commented online after an Irish traveler discovered just how long the road to Indian citizenship really is. The exchange, which unfolded on X, has drawn widespread attention for highlighting how strict India’s naturalization rules are compared to popular perception.

The Irish Traveler’s Viral Post

The story began when a man announced on social media that he had just arrived in Kolkata and was so taken with the city that he wanted to stay permanently. He turned to Grok, the AI chatbot built by Musk’s company xAI, asking how quickly he could obtain Indian citizenship. The chatbot’s response surprised him: becoming a citizen would take at least 14 years, factoring in roughly 12 years of continuous lawful residence and the requirement to give up any existing dual nationality. Grok also noted that final approval remains entirely at the discretion of the Indian government.

No Shortcuts for Newcomers

Grok’s explanation didn’t stop at the timeline. It clarified that new arrivals and non-citizens are not eligible for social welfare or unemployment support, and that benefits such as ration cards or pensions require both citizenship and specific eligibility criteria. The chatbot further pointed out that property ownership in India hinges on a person’s immigration and residency status rather than financial standing alone, meaning sudden wealth would not fast-track either housing or citizenship.

Musk’s reaction to the exchange, simply calling India “realistic,” has since amplified the conversation, with many users weighing in on how the country’s approach compares to immigration policies elsewhere.
