Family of Mozambique Student Set to Arrive in Vadodara

The family of Lawrenco Fernando, a 25-year-old student from Mozambique, is set to arrive in Vadodara on Friday to complete his final rites, four days after his body was recovered from a pond in Khatamba, Vadodara district.

Fernando was studying for a Masters in Public Health at Parul University when the cab he was traveling in allegedly fell into the water, leading to his tragic death.

Support from Parul University Vadodara and the Indian High Commission:

Fernando’s school, Parul University, and the High Commission of India in Mozambique have assisted his family during this difficult time.

The university and the High Commission sponsored air tickets for two of Fernando’s relatives to travel to India to attend his final rites. The body is currently being preserved in a cold room at SSG Hospital in Vadodara.

University’s Efforts and Coordination:

Vandit Anjaria, Director of the Office of International Affairs at Parul University, stated that the university has been actively involved in coordinating the process.

A university representative was sent to SSG Hospital to oversee the procedure of handing over the body. The university also maintained contact with the High Commissioner of India in Mozambique and the Embassy of Mozambique to ensure the family could travel to India.

Family’s Arrival and Funeral Arrangements in Vadodara:

Fernando’s family, facing financial constraints, initially struggled to arrange their travel to India. However, with the support provided, two of Fernando’s five siblings will arrive in Vadodara on Saturday.

Fernando’s ageing parents, who are unable to travel due to their health, will not be able to attend the funeral. The burial is scheduled for Saturday and will be attended by an official from the Embassy of Mozambique. Anjaria described Fernando as a sincere student with a promising future, emphasizing that he was never involved in any controversy.

Ongoing Police Investigation:

Meanwhile, the Varnama police station in Vadodara is still searching for Deepak, the cab driver who was involved in the accident. Deepak allegedly escaped the incident unhurt and later falsely claimed that Fernando was “safe.”

The Vadodara rural police are awaiting the results of the visceral reports to determine the exact cause of Fernando’s death, as indicated in the postmortem report from SSG Hospital.
