The Vadodara Police took action against the former coach of the Indian women’s cricket team, Tushar Arothe, following the discovery of cash worth Rs 1 crore in his residence in the city’s Pratapgunj area.

Lack of Explanation Raises Suspicion for Vadodara Police:

According to a press release published by the police’s Special Operations Group (SOG), Arothe failed to provide a satisfactory explanation when questioned about the source of the seized cash.

The SOG, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid at Arothe’s residence, uncovering “grey bags” containing a total sum of Rs 1.01 crore.

Involvement of Arothe’s Son and Accomplices:

SOG Inspector V S Patel revealed that the raid was prompted by information suggesting that cash had been delivered to Arothe’s son, Rishi, who had previously faced cricket betting and cheating charges.

Additionally, two other individuals, Vikrant Raipatvar and Amit Janit, were found in possession of Rs 38 lakh. Arothe Raipatvar and Janit faced legal action under CrPC Section 102 (power to seize property) due to their inability to provide a satisfactory explanation for the substantial amount of cash discovered.

Previous Legal Encounters by Vadodara Police:

This incident adds to Arothe’s history with legal issues concerning cricket. In April 2019, he was among 19 individuals apprehended by the Vadodara Crime Branch during an IPL match between Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab for suspected involvement in betting activities. Despite the arrest, the court granted Arothe and the other accused bail.

Arothe’s Cricket Career and Coaching Stint:

Arothe, a former first-class cricketer representing Baroda, gained prominence as the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team. Under his leadership, the team reached the World Cup final in 2017, resulting in a two-year contract extension.

However, discord within the team led to his premature resignation in July 2018 following the defeat to Bangladesh in the Asia Cup final. Arothe had previously served as part of the team’s coaching staff from 2008 to 2012.
