In a landmark regulatory decision, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a strict order prohibiting companies from labeling products as Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) unless they comply with World Health Organisation-recommended formulations. The directive, issued on October 14, 2025, marks a significant step in consumer protection and public health.

The Critical Role of Glucose in ORS

According to pediatrician Dr Sivaranjani Santosh, who has been raising awareness about mislabeled ORS brands, the regulation addresses a critical public health concern. ORS is a life-saving solution with a specific formula designed to work effectively during dehydration and diarrhea. The presence of glucose is essential as it facilitates the body’s absorption of water and salt through the intestines. When manufacturers alter this formula by removing glucose or substituting key ingredients, the product becomes ineffective and potentially misleading to consumers.

Crackdown on Non-Compliant Products

Many brands across India have been selling ORS solutions that lack glucose, the fundamental component that makes ORS medically effective. The FSSAI’s order mandates that all non-compliant products must be removed from shelves immediately. Dr Santosh expressed her relief and satisfaction with the regulatory action, emphasizing that this ban protects consumers from purchasing ineffective products during critical health situations.

This regulation ensures that only products meeting WHO standards can use the ORS designation, preventing consumer confusion and guaranteeing that authentic oral rehydration salts are available in the Indian market.
