Ganesh festival is one of India’s biggest festivals, especially in Maharashtra. When we say the Ganesh festival, the first thing that comes to our mind is Lalbaugcha Raja.
Lalbaugcha Raja is integral to Mumbai’s cultural and is renowned as the “King of Lalbaug.” The idol’s grandeur and the people’s faith and devotion have made it a significant religious and social phenomenon in the city.
This year, Lalbaugcha Raja has completed 90 years, and the Ganesh Muhurat pooja of Lalbaugcha Raja’s feet is completed, now the preparation for the big idol of Bappa will start, which will going to be 14 feet tall.
This year Ganesh Chaturthi will take place on 19th Sep 2023 and devotes will see the idol one day ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi.
The story of Lalbaugcha Raja begins with a fisherman named Kambli, who lived in the Lalbaug area of Mumbai.
Kambli was an ardent devotee of Lord Ganesh and used to worship a small Ganesh idol in his home. However, he faced a financial crisis one day and could not continue his daily worship. Distressed, Kambli immersed the idol in the Arabian Sea per the Hindu tradition.
Soon after, a surprising turn of events occurred. Kambli’s financial condition improved dramatically, and out of gratitude, he established a public Ganesh idol in Lalbaug. He sought the help of his fellow fishermen, and together, they collected donations from the local community to fund the project.
In 1934, Kambli and his associates installed the first Ganesh idol at Lalbaug. The idol quickly gained popularity due to its benevolence, with numerous devotees experiencing positive outcomes and fulfilling their desires after worshipping it.
Over the years, Lalbaugcha Raja grew in stature and size, becoming an iconic symbol of devotion and faith in Mumbai.
