Gauri Sawant on Sushmita Sen’s role in Taali

Gauri Sawant, a transgender activist, discusses Sushmita Sen’s biopic Taali, which brings her life story to life onscreen.

For transgender activist Gauri Sawant, seeing Sushmita Sen bring her story to life on screen with Taali is a massive victory for the entire community. She doesn’t want to worry about the rumors about someone from the community getting the job.

Sen took to Instagram earlier this week to share the first look at her upcoming web project, Taali. Along with positive feedback, the first look spark a social media debate about transgender actors not being consider for such roles.

“1st and foremost, I want to emphasise that the project will feature many transgender actors. Who were chosen after a rigorous audition process. I’m also involve in the project, though not as an actor. “It’s not just that Sushmita is the only actor in the project,” Sawant explains.

“Most of us in the community wanted to be women, so we decided to wear a saree,” she continues. As we have seen in the past, it is now a mark of respect for us. That a female actor is playing the role rather than a male actor.”

She is perplex as to why people have raise the possibility that a transgender person should have been hire for the position.

“Think about how difficult the role will be for a woman of such stature. Because the role carries a lot of taboos that we have to live with, she has shown bravery in taking it on. “She was my first choice,” she explains.

Sawant asserts here, “Humme bhi dosre role karne do.” I want to suggest that people consider us for other roles. For example. I did a commercial in which I played the role of a mother, and people accepted me in that role. Why should it be limite to transgender roles?”
