Gujarat Floods: 28 Dead, Thousands Evacuated; Rains Continue

Gujarat Floods: At least 28 people have died in Gujarat over the past three days as exceptionally heavy rains continue to batter the state. The deaths have been reported across several districts, including Ahmedabad, Anand, Gandhinagar, Kheda, and others.

Among the deceased are seven individuals who went missing after their tractor-trolley was swept away by floodwaters near Dhavana village in Morbi district.

Mass Evacuations and Rescue Operations at Gujarat Floods:

As the situation worsens, nearly 18,000 people have been evacuated from flood-hit areas. The state government, in coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), has been actively involved in rescue operations.

Additionally, the Gujarat government has requested the assistance of the Indian Army, with six columns deployed across the most affected districts.

Severe Flooding and Infrastructure Damage:

Widespread flooding has been reported across Gujarat, particularly in low-lying areas. In Vadodara, the Vishwamitri River breached its banks, severely flooding residential localities. Infrastructure damage is also significant, with key roads, including the one leading to the Statue of Unity, suffering from the deluge.

IMD Weather Alerts and Forecast on Gujarat Floods:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for 11 districts in the Kachchh and Saurashtra regions, including Kachchh, Dwarka, Jamnagar, and Rajkot.

A yellow alert has been issued for 22 additional districts across North, Central, and South Gujarat. The IMD predicts that the deep depression causing the heavy rainfall will move towards the Arabian Sea by August 30, but further intensification is possible before it clears.

Government Response and Ongoing Efforts:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to assess the situation and assured the Centre’s full support. Rescue efforts remain in full swing as authorities work to prevent further loss of life and manage the ongoing crisis.
