Gujarat Government Constructs 76 Multi-Purpose Cyclone Shelters

In collaboration with the Centre and the World Bank, the Gujarat government has constructed 76 multi-purpose cyclone shelters (MPCS) across the state to safeguard lives during natural calamities, particularly cyclones.

These shelters have been strategically built in coastal districts most vulnerable to cyclonic activities.

Distribution of Cyclone Shelters:

  • Junagadh: 25 shelters
  • Gir Somnath: 29 shelters
  • Bharuch: 5 shelters
  • Porbandar: 4 shelters
  • Devbhumi Dwarka: 4 shelters
  • Kutch: 4 shelters
  • Amreli: 2 shelters
  • Jamnagar: 1 shelter
  • Navsari: 1 shelter
  • Ahmedabad: 1 shelter

Cyclone History and Impact on Gujarat:

Gujarat, with India’s longest coastline of about 1,600 km, has experienced several significant cyclones over the years, including Biparjoy (2023), Tauktae (2021), and Nisarga (2000).

Cyclone Biparjoy caused significant damage in Kutch and north Gujarat but fortunately resulted in no casualties, while Cyclone Tauktae led to substantial destruction in the Saurashtra region.

Government Measures:

During cyclones like Biparjoy and Tauktae, the government relocated over one lakh people to safe locations such as primary schools to prevent loss of life.

The construction of these permanent shelters is a step towards providing secure and stable infrastructure for future emergencies.

Features and Benefits of the Cyclone Shelters

  • Community Kitchens: Equipped to provide fresh meals during emergencies.
  • Medical Teams: Stand-by teams for regular health checks.
  • Training and Resources: Locals are receiving training and resources for comprehensive disaster preparedness.
  • Wildlife Rescue SOP: An SOP has been prepared to rescue wildlife, including Gir lions and other vulnerable animals, during cyclones.

Community Response on Cyclone Shelters:

The local community has positively received the establishment of these cyclone shelters.

Kirti Gaur, the sarpanch of Maska village in Kachchh district, commended the initiative, highlighting the ease it brings in moving people to safety and preventing casualties. The shelters also ensure that people can resume their work comfortably post-cyclone.
