The city is divided into two cities. This divide is the cause of the Sabarmati river. The river divides the city into two parts.
Old Ahmedabad is also known as Walled Area. The city had a 10 km long wall. It is said that this wall was used to protect this city in the old days.
There were pillars on it, which showed the houses of community specials and their area.
There were 12 gates on this wall. Some of the gates still survive today. Delhi Darwaza and Lal Darwaza are the main ones.
Ahmed Shah changed the name to Ahmedabad:
Ahmedabad was earlier known as Karnavati and was renamed in 1411 by Sultan Ahmad Shah of the Muzaffar dynasty when he conquered it from King Karnadeva I.
Many mosques here show the architecture of that time. When Maharashtra and Gujarat were separated from Bombay state after the Mahagujarat movement, Ahmedabad became the capital of Gujarat from 1960 to 1970.
After that, a new city was designed and settled, named Gandhinagar. Today Gandhinagar is the capital of Gujarat.
Even today, Gujarat High Court is situated in Ahmedabad. The city is considered the economic centre of Gujarat.
Centre of freedom movement:
Ahmedabad played an important role in the freedom movement; the city witnessed all major events and struggles due to Mahatma Gandhi’s movement against British rule.
The main road here is Ashram Road due to Bapu’s ashram on the Sabarmati River.
Mahatma Gandhi stayed at Sabarmati Ashram for a long time. Due to this, the textile industry was also called the Manchester of the East, which brought Ahmedabad into the 21st century.
The city is known for its grandeur and grand celebrations during Navratri, an open-air cultural and spiritual extravaganza.
The biggest stadium in the world:
There are many historical buildings in Ahmedabad. But the cricket stadium built in Motera in the new era is its greatest glory.
Narendra Modi Stadium is the largest cricket stadium in the world regarding the number of spectators. This stadium was much talked about at the Namaste Trump event.
IIM Ahmedabad is a great honour. Regarding development, the western area of Ahmedabad has seen the most expansion.
The political strength of the city is also very high. Of the 182 assembly seats in Gujarat, 21 belong to the city.
