The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning on Tuesday, noting that heavy to very heavy rain were likely in Mumbai and Thane districts over the next several hours.
Mumbai saw heavy to very heavy rainfall over the previous 24 hours, which ended at 08:30 a.m. on Tuesday, with the city’s average rainfall standing at 88.24mm.
Heavy rain in several parts:
Santacruz received 119.9mm, Colaba received 106.0mm, Dahisar received 93mm, Ram-mandir received 82.5mm, Chembur received 70.5mm, Vidyavihar received 106.5mm, Byculla received 81mm, CSMT received 111mm, Matunga received 74mm, and Sion received 91mm in the last 24 hours.
Several locations, including Bandra, Dahisar, Chembur, Fort, Matunga, and Byculla, received severe rains on Monday night.
Until July 19, the IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert over Mumbai and its nearby areas. On July 20, Palghar and Thane districts will be under the same warning, while Raigad will be on orange alert until July 21.
Yellow alert by RMC in Mumbai:
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Mumbai issued a ‘yellow’ alert for Palghar on Tuesday and an ‘orange’ alert for Wednesday and Thursday. RMC forecasted heavy to very heavy rain for sections of the districts during the next two days. Palghar Collector Govind Bodke has warned people to stay indoors, be cautious, and avoid entering rivers and other bodies of water.
9cm of rain with in 24hrs:
Notably, Matheran hill station in Raigad district had 9cm of rain in 24 hours, concluding at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. The district of Thane received 46.4mm of rain.
The IMD has also warned for unusual cases of ‘very heavy’ rainfall in the Konkan on July 19, i.e. more than 204.4mm daily.
“In the Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area is forming, which will strengthen the offshore monsoon trough near Maharashtra.” “When this system moves closer to the coast or inland around July 18, Mumbai and adjacent parts of the Konkan will see a monsoon revival,” said an IMD scientist in the city.
Railway services affected on Tuesday:
Heavy rain disrupted the Central Railway’s suburban services on Tuesday. A failure of an express train engine was also recorded. Several commuters reported that local city trains were running 20-25 minutes late.
The maximum temperature in Mumbai is expected to be between 28 and 29 degrees Celsius for the coming week, while the minimum temperature will remain around 24 degrees Celsius. Cloudy and dreary skies will prevail, with little to no sunlight.
