Linking Aadhaar to the Electoral Roll: The Government’s Ten Point Defense

The opposition has strongly opposed the bill and demanded a re-examination, claiming that linking Aadhaar with Voter IDs will allow non-citizens to vote.

According to “government sources,” the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill 2021 is require because of the following reasons:

4. This bill includes a provision that allows new applicants to voluntarily provide their Aadhaar number along with their application for identity verification.
5. No application will be reject due to a lack of an Aadhaar number.
6. This could be due to electors frequently changing addresses and enrolling in the new location without deleting the previous enrolment.
7. As a result, electors whose names appear on more than one electoral roll. In some cases, on multiple electoral rolls can be eliminate.
8. When the Aadhaar link is establish, the electoral roll data system will immediately alert previous registration(s) when a person applies for new registration.
