Relief operations at the landslide site in Kerala, affected due to heavy rainfall and broken power, CM Vijayan and PM Modi announce ex-gratia for victims in Idukki.

In Kerala’s Idukki, due to extremely heavy rainfall, a mudslide occurred in the Nyamakad estate of the Kannan Devan Hills Plantation Company near Rajamala in Devikulum Taluk on Friday, around 7 am. The landslide has left at least 15 persons dead and more than 40 persons missing. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a press briefing revealed that efforts are underway to find the missing persons, and till now, a total of 15 people have been rescued. The mudslide has led to the burial of least 30 settlements, by the debris, where nearly 78 people reside. 

Kerala CM announces relief amount for those affected by the landslide:

The Kerala chief minister said that the state government will bear the entire expense to treat the wounded, and also announced a compensation of INR 5 lakh to the family of the deceased. Devikulam sub-collector Prem Krishnan reflected on the incident and said that the mishap was certainly a huge landslide. He stated that since the last two days, extreme rainfall is pouring down in the region and that has led to severe power outages in Devikulam. A joint relief-rescue operation was carried out by a unit of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the police, fire force, and locals. People who have sustained minor injuries are being treated in Munnar, and those who need critical care will be treated in Idukki and Ernakulam.

Prime Minister shares his grievance on the Idukki landslide:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grievance regarding the landslide and announced an ex-gratia of INR 2 lakh each to the family of those who passed away. A sum of 50,000 will also be given to the injured people.
