Heavy rain leads schools shut in several Kerala districts

Heavy rain leads schools shut in several Kerala districts

Due to the severe rains lashing Kerala, education institutions in five districts were closed on Friday.

Schools and professional institutions in Kannur, Kozhikode, Kasaragod, Pathanamthitta, and Kottayam will close due to weather warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department in these areas.

However, public service commission tests will be held on time.

On Thursday, all educational institutions in Alappuzha, Kannur, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Kasaragod, Palakkad, Idukki, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, and Kollam were closed.

For the day, a red alert has been issued in Kannur and Kasaragod districts, and an orange alert has been issued in seven additional districts across the state. According to IMD, the intensity of the rain will diminish in the coming days.

Because of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, Kerala has experienced heavy rains, which have claimed three lives, displaced thousands, and caused coastal erosion and river overflow.

Due to the gravity of the situation, district and taluk-level emergency operations centres have been asked to function 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Kerala CM issue warning:

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan warned residents to be cautious since flash floods, landslides, and strong winds were possible in several state regions.

In a Facebook post, he claimed that several people had been relocated to the 112 relief camps, and he advised fishermen not to go near bodies of water and to avoid trekking trips.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has also issued warnings about tourism and travels to mountainous areas. K Rajan, the state revenue minister, predicted that the weather would worsen again on July 12.

Some dams’ shutters were opened to discharge water downstream, including Malankara Dam, Kallarkutti & Lower Periyar reservoirs in Idukki, Kuttiyadi Dam in Kozhikode, Maniyar barrage in Pathanamthitta, Pazhassi barrage in Kannur, and Bhoothathankettu Dam in Ernakulam district.

Flood warnings were issued by the Central Water Commission (CWC) for several rivers, including the Meenachil, Manimala, Achankovil, and Pampa.
