IIT Hyderabad Student Secures Record Rs 2.5 Crore Job Offer

Edward Nathan Varghese, a 21-year-old final-year computer science student at IIT Hyderabad, has set a new institutional record by securing a Rs 2.5 crore annual package from global trading firm Optiver. This milestone marks the highest placement package in the institute’s history since its establishment in 2008, surpassing the previous record of around Rs 1 crore set in 2017.

From Internship to Dream Offer

Varghese converted a two-month summer internship at Optiver into a pre-placement offer (PPO) following a training phase and project completion. While two students participated in the internship program, Varghese was the sole recipient of the full-time offer. Based in the Netherlands, his software engineer role begins in July 2025, representing another significant international placement for the institute. “This was the first and only company I interviewed for. I was ecstatic when my mentor indicated that the firm would be extending me an offer,” Varghese shared with TOI.

Strong Institutional Performance Beyond Headlines

The placement season reflects broader institutional strength beyond record-breaking numbers. The average package has surged 75% compared to last year, rising from Rs 20.8 lakh to Rs 36.2 lakh. Another computer science student secured Rs 1.1 crore, further elevating the campus ceiling. In Phase 1, students clinched 24 international offers, while 62% of registered undergraduates have been placed. Officials emphasize inclusive growth, with early slots provided to PSUs and core engineering firms to enhance opportunities for non-tech students.

Varghese credits competitive programming expertise and the IIT brand’s market strength for his success, demonstrating how specialized skills combined with institutional reputation create exceptional placement outcomes.
