IMD Warns Potential Cyclonic Storm in Gujarat and Several States

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned about a strong cyclonic storm forming in the Bay of Bengal, potentially affecting several western states of India in the coming days.

The IMD predicts that the storm, currently in its intensification phase, will land on the eastern coast before moving westward, impacting states such as Odisha, Maharashtra, and Gujarat between May 23 and May 27.

Cyclonic Storm Potential Impact on Mumbai and Gujarat:

According to the weather department, the cyclone could bring heavy rainfall to Mumbai and Gujarat around May 28. Mumbai Nowcast, an X (formerly Twitter) account dedicated to weather updates, posted: “Cyclone Alert: Intense cyclone is expected in the Bay of Bengal by May 23, which is likely to impact Odisha, Maharashtra, and Gujarat between 23 and 27. Models are predicting Heavy Rains for Gujarat and Mumbai around May 28.”

Current Weather Conditions:

While the IMD has yet to release a formal advisory regarding the developing cyclone, it has issued heatwave warnings for several regions.

Isolated pockets of Gangetic West Bengal are expected to experience heatwave conditions on May 18 and 19, while Gujarat is under a heatwave warning from May 17 to 18 and Odisha from May 19 to 21.

Preparations and Precautions Cyclonic Storm:

Authorities and residents in the potentially impacted areas are advised to stay fixed with the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions.

Given the potential for heavy rainfall and strong winds, preparations should be made to mitigate damage, including securing loose objects, ensuring clear drainage systems, and having emergency supplies ready.
