India Loses Historic ODI Series to New Zealand at Home

New Zealand scripted history on Sunday by winning their first bilateral ODI series in India since 1988, defeating the hosts by 41 runs in the decisive third match at Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. The loss marked a significant setback for India, who came into the contest with the series level at 1-1. India captain Shubman Gill acknowledged the shortfall, stating that the team’s performance was “disappointing” and emphasized areas requiring substantial improvement before the 2027 World Cup.

New Zealand’s Commanding Performance

New Zealand posted an imposing 337 for eight after being sent in to bat first. Daryl Mitchell continued his exceptional form with a century, scoring 137 off 131 balls featuring 15 fours and a six. Glenn Phillips added significant momentum with a powerful 106 off 88 deliveries, while captain Michael Bracewell contributed an unbeaten 28 off 18 balls. India’s bowling unit, spearheaded by Arshdeep Singh (3/63) and Harshit Rana (3/84), managed to pick up wickets but couldn’t contain the visitors’ onslaught.

India’s Chase Falls Short

India’s chase revolved around Virat Kohli’s resolute 124 off 108 balls, supported by Harshit Rana’s maiden ODI fifty (52 off 43 balls) and Nitish Kumar Reddy’s composed 53 off 57 balls. Despite a 99-run partnership between Kohli and Rana, India fell short, scoring 296 in 46 overs. Gill praised individual performances but acknowledged the collective effort wasn’t sufficient, particularly considering the team’s preparation for the upcoming World Cup in India.
