India vs Afghanistan Squad Selection: Selectors Meet in Guwahati Today

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) selection committee, chaired by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, convened in Guwahati on Tuesday to announce the Indian squads for the upcoming home series against Afghanistan. The panel is expected to name teams for both the one-off Test match, scheduled to begin on June 6, and the ODI series to follow.

Notably, the Test fixture falls outside the ICC World Test Championship cycle, giving selectors greater flexibility in managing player workloads and experimenting with the squad composition.

Bumrah’s Workload Management in Focus

A key talking point ahead of the announcement is whether pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah — currently ranked as the world’s top Test bowler — will be rested. With an eye on long-term fitness and performance management, the selectors may opt to give the Mumbai Indians pacer a break, paving the way for other seamers to stake their claim.

Fresh Faces Could Get Their Chance

The selection meeting is generating considerable excitement around potential new call-ups. Jammu and Kashmir’s right-arm pacer Auqib Dar, who has impressed in domestic cricket, is reportedly under consideration for the Test squad. Meanwhile, Delhi’s all-rounder Prince Yadav is being looked at for a possible ODI debut.

The series represents a significant opportunity for India to blood fresh talent while resting established stars ahead of a demanding international calendar later in the year.
