India Urges Bangladesh to Act Against Attacks on Minorities

Ministry’s Concern

At a press briefing on Friday, January 9, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), expressed deep concern over the atrocities committed against minorities in Bangladesh. He emphasized that the Bangladesh government must take immediate and strict action to curb such incidents.

Growing Fear Among Minorities

The MEA noted that minorities in Bangladesh are experiencing a rising sense of fear and insecurity due to repeated attacks. Jaiswal stressed that it is the responsibility of the authorities to prevent communal incidents and ensure the safety of vulnerable communities.

Strong Statement from MEA

Jaiswal stated: “We are continuously monitoring the repeated attacks by extremists on minorities as well as their homes and businesses. This is a worrying trend. Such communal incidents need to be addressed immediately and strongly.”

He further warned against dismissing these incidents as mere personal enmity, political differences, or external factors, saying that such explanations only embolden perpetrators and deepen insecurity among minorities.

Diplomatic Context

India’s remarks add to the growing international concern over the situation in Bangladesh, where extremist violence against minorities has drawn condemnation from multiple quarters. The MEA’s statement underscores India’s expectation that Dhaka will act decisively to restore confidence and protect all communities.

Outlook

The issue is likely to remain a point of diplomatic engagement between India and Bangladesh, with New Delhi signaling that it will continue to monitor developments closely and press for accountability in cases of communal violence.
