Two Indian Army personnel designed the iconic logo of Operation Sindoor, which has become a powerful symbol of India’s resolve against terror after the precision strikes in response to the Pahalgam massacre.
The logo was created in-house by Lt Col Harsh Gupta and Havildar Surinder Singh from the Social Media Section of the Additional Directorate General of Strategic Communication. Unlike logos designed by professional agencies, this emblem was born within the army, reflecting authenticity and patriotic spirit.
Operation Sindoor was India’s swift retaliation to the brutal April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, where five terrorists killed 26 civilians in the Baisaran Valley of Jammu and Kashmir. The operation involved air strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7, 2025. The logo was unveiled minutes after the strike, signaling justice served.
The design is simple yet deeply symbolic. The second “O” in the word “Sindoor” is crafted as a traditional vermilion (sindoor) bowl, a sacred emblem worn by married Hindu women symbolizing marriage and commitment. The bold red hue of the sindoor bowl signifies sacrifice, courage, and the nation’s fierce determination to fight terrorism. This symbolism struck a chord with millions across India, turning the logo into a viral emblem of strength and justice.
The Indian Army shared the logo at 1:51 am on X (formerly Twitter) on the night of May 7, accompanied by the message: “#PahalgamTerrorAttack Justice is Served. Jai Hind!” The post quickly garnered widespread attention and became the face of the military’s decisive action.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the significance of Operation Sindoor and its logo during his Mann Ki Baat radio address. He said, “Operation Sindoor was not just a military mission but the face of a changing India. It reflects the country’s resolve, courage, and growing strength on the global stage.”
The special edition of the army’s Baatcheet magazine details the story behind the logo and the operation. It carries images from the aftermath of the Pahalgam massacre, including emotional scenes of coffins and grieving families, underscoring the tragedy that prompted the strikes.
The magazine also highlights the role of Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, showing a timestamped photo of him monitoring the operation from a command center, reflecting the meticulous planning behind the strikes.
Lt Col Harsh Gupta and Havildar Surinder Singh’s creation has become more than just a design; it is a rallying point for patriotism and a reminder of the army’s commitment to safeguarding the nation. The logo’s popularity also marks a modern approach by the Indian Army in connecting with the public through powerful visuals and social media outreach.
In the narrative of Operation Sindoor, the logo stands out as a symbol of resilience and justice, immortalizing the sacrifices and strength of Indian soldiers and civilians alike. It represents not only a successful military mission but also the collective spirit of a nation united against terrorism.
