During that forgettable 1028-day span, Virat Kohli made mistakes across all formats for a century, and his form deteriorated to the point where he had to take a month off.
The only player in history to score 10 centuries against Sri Lanka in ODI matches is the former captain of India.
Virat Kohli blundered for a century across formats during that forgettable 1028-day period, and his form declined to the point where he had to take a month off.
Shoaib Akhtar, a former Pakistan cricketer who was one of those ardent believers, had predicted that there would be no stopping him once Kohli was able to escape the chains.
Since breaking his century-long dry spell in T20Is last September, Kohli scored four hundred, including two at the beginning of 2023 and three in ODIs, all against Sri Lanka.
In his 85-ball innings on Sunday at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram during the third and final series against Sri Lanka, Kohli hit 10 boundaries and just one six to record the 46th ODI century of his career.
Although he is currently three tonnes shy of Sachin Tendulkar’s incredible record of 49 tonnes, he still ranks second all-time in the format.
With the century, Kohli surpassed Sachin in the list of most tonnes against one opponent and broke his record for the feat. The former captain of India is currently the only player in history to score 10 centuries against Sri Lanka in ODI matches.
He and Sachin have nine tonnes each against the West Indies and Australia, respectively. Additionally, he surpassed Sachin’s mark for the most home centuries. In 101 innings for India, this was Kohli’s 21st such hit.
With his 113-run performance in the first game of the series earlier this week, he had tied Sachin for second on this list.
As soon as he passed the fifty-point mark, Kohli shared second place in the all-time list of ODI home players with former Australia captain Ricky Ponting and legendary South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis.
Only former Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar has more scores (46), followed by all three (58). Twenty centuries and 26 fifties are included in Kohli’s total.
He overtook Kallis (5186 runs) en route to the milestone and moved up to third place in the format’s home run leaders. Kohli has more runs at home than Sachin (6976) and Ponting (5521).
The achievement that stood out the most was Kohli’s ascent into the top five ODI run scorers.
Kohli passed Mahela Jayawardene, a legend of Sri Lankan cricket who amassed 12650 runs during his illustrious career in 50-over cricket when he reached the 64-run mark in his innings.
Following top scorer Sachin (18426), Kohli is now the 2nd Indian on the list. Sanath Jayasuriya (13430), Ponting (13704), and Kumar Sangakkara (14234) are some others.
