Virat Kohli edged a wide ball from Scott Boland in the fourth innings of the World Test Championship final, and Steve Smith took an absolute blinder while diving to his left at slip.

The departure dealt a significant setback to India as they sought a historic victory in the final at the Oval; the team is pursuing a 444-run total, which, if achieved, would be a record run-chase in Test cricket.

After being restricted to defensive strokes for most of the first 30 minutes of the session, Virat Kohli sought to attack a wide ball from Boland, but his expansive drive only struck a thick edge.

Steve Smith finished a brilliant catch in the slip cordon, sending Kohli back into the box for 49. Kohli appeared to be in excellent form on the evening of day four but fell early on day five and could not pile on many more runs.

Two balls later, Ravindra Jadeja edged an edge to Alex Carey, sending India reeling.

Following Kohli’s dismissal, cameras focused on his wife, Anushka Sharma, who appeared stunned and bemused at the wicket falling so early on a critical day of play.

Anushka’s response mirrored all the onlookers and those watching at home as the writing appeared on the wall once Smith held on to the thick edge.

Kohli was regarded as India’s best hope of accomplishing a record chase in the WTC final. Still, with India’s most prolific Test batsman no longer at the crease, an already difficult task appears to be settled.

Earlier in the day, India had started Day 5 at 164/3, with both Kohli and Rahane looking fine.

While Kohli faced the Australian pacers early in his innings, Rahane carried on from where he left off in the first innings, where he was the team’s leading run-scorer (89).
