At least 19 personnel of Tata Steel’s 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Meramandali, Odisha’s Dhenkanal, suffered burn injuries at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, five of whom were critically injured after one of the steam pipes exploded due to a leak.

The incident occurred during an inspection when a steam pipe burst due to a gas leak. Some workers and engineers checking the blast furnace were hurt when boiling water dropped on them.

According to a press release from Tata Steel, the injured were immediately transferred to the Occupational Health Centre within the facility and subsequently to Cuttack for further treatment.

“We are cooperating with appropriate authorities and conducting our internal investigation.” Our first focus remains safety, and we are dedicated to learning from this occurrence. “More information will be provided as it becomes available,” Tata Steel said in an official statement.
