Virat Kohli’s test exit: Wasim Jaffer calls handling “Bitter”.

Former India batter questions management of Kohli’s retirement.

Virat Kohli’s sudden retirement from Test cricket continues to spark debate, with former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer saying the star batter was left “bitter” by how his exit was handled. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer argued that Kohli’s stature and commitment to red-ball cricket warranted a more diplomatic approach from selectors and team management.

Kohli, who ended his Test career on May 12, 2025, amassed 9,230 runs, including 30 centuries, across 123 matches over 14 years. He decided after months of uncertainty over his place in the side. Despite turning out for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy earlier that year to underline his intent, Kohli was informed in April that selectors planned to back a younger captain for the England tour. He was also told his selection would be judged purely on form, like any other batter. Disillusioned, Kohli opted out of the tour and announced his retirement soon after.

Jaffer highlighted Kohli’s preparations for the England series as evidence that the situation could have been handled with greater sensitivity. “A player like Virat draws crowds; he has such a massive following. He definitely could have played more Test cricket. Until we hear directly from Virat, we won’t know the full story,” Jaffer remarked. He added that Kohli’s readiness to continue in the format made the abrupt end feel avoidable.

Beyond Kohli’s case, Jaffer reflected on India’s broader selection policies. He acknowledged that the team had taken bold decisions- some successful, others disappointing. While India’s white-ball performances remained strong, he noted that struggles in the Test format reflected more coaching and captaincy than selection. “Selectors can only pick the players. It’s up to the coach and captain what team they field,” he said.

Jaffer concluded that while the overall job of the selectors had been “decent,” the handling of Kohli’s retirement left fans and the player himself dissatisfied. “Bold decisions were taken, but certain individuals could have been managed better. In my opinion, it could have been handled more diplomatically,” he observed.
