Olympic javelin star says ankle injury has healed significantly and plans to restart training and rehabilitation soon.

India’s star javelin thrower and two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra is preparing to return to action after making encouraging progress in his recovery from an ankle injury that sidelined him for the latter part of the 2026 season. The 28-year-old athlete said he hopes to resume training and rehabilitation in the next few weeks, marking a major step towards his return to competitive athletics.

Chopra sustained the injury during a training session in August, forcing him to withdraw from several key events, including the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya and the Diamond League Final. The setback abruptly ended a promising season, leaving fans and the athletics community eagerly awaiting updates on his condition.

Speaking about his recovery, Chopra said the initial phase was challenging, particularly in the first few weeks after the injury. However, he noted that his ankle has responded well to treatment and rest, allowing him to regain confidence in returning to the field. After consultations with renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, the Olympic champion has been advised to restart training while gradually beginning a structured rehabilitation programme.

Throughout his recovery, Chopra focused on adhering to medical guidance and avoiding unnecessary risks that could delay healing. He acknowledged the support from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), highlighting the role both organisations have played in helping him manage his recovery and prepare to return to competition.

Before his injury, Chopra’s final appearance of the season was at the Lausanne Diamond League in August, where he secured second place. Earlier in the year, he added another medal to his collection by claiming silver at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Beyond his personal comeback plans, Chopra also welcomed the government’s newly approved Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme. He described the initiative as a significant boost for Indian athletes, noting that many competitors often struggle to find quality sporting equipment in the country. He believes that increased domestic manufacturing will make essential gear more accessible and affordable.

Chopra also extended his best wishes to India’s contingent at the Youth Olympic Games, encouraging young athletes to embrace the experience, learn from international competition, and use the pressure of elite events as motivation to grow and perform at their best.
