Cristiano Ronaldo wins Ballon d’Or of all time.

Fans select 2008 Manchester United season over Messi’s 2012 Barcelona campaign.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the winner of the Ballon d’Or of All Time (B.O.A.T.), a special award introduced to mark the 70th anniversary of football’s most prestigious individual honour. In a fan-driven vote organised by the Ballon d’Or committee, Ronaldo’s 2007/08 season with Manchester United was chosen as the greatest Ballon d’Or-winning campaign in history, edging out Lionel Messi’s record-breaking 2012 season with Barcelona.

Messi may hold the most Ballon d’Or trophies overall. Still, supporters felt Ronaldo’s peak year at Old Trafford struck the perfect balance between team success and individual brilliance. During that campaign, the Portuguese forward guided United to a Premier League and UEFA Champions League double, scoring 42 goals and providing eight assists across all competitions. His performances earned him a clean sweep of accolades, including the Premier League Golden Boot, Champions League Top Scorer, European Golden Shoe, Premier League Player of the Season, PFA Players’ Player of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year, UEFA Club Footballer of the Year, and FIFA World Player of the Year.

By contrast, Messi’s 2012 season remains legendary for its sheer numbers, with the Argentine netting an astonishing 91 goals in a single calendar year. Yet fans ultimately favoured Ronaldo’s campaign for its decisive impact on both domestic and European triumphs.

The B.O.A.T. rankings underscored the dominance of the two modern greats, with Ronaldo and Messi occupying all ten spots. Ronaldo’s seasons in 2008, 2017, 2016, 2014, and 2013 were voted among the finest, while Messi’s campaigns in 2012, 2023, 2015, 2011, and 2009 completed the list.

Unlike the rare “Super Ballon d’Or,” awarded only once to Alfredo Di Stéfano in 1989, the B.O.A.T. is a fan-centric celebration of footballing excellence. It recognises not only trophy accumulation but also the artistry and influence of a single season. For Ronaldo, the award adds another layer to his legacy, affirming his status as one of the game’s most complete forwards.

The announcement followed closely after Harry Kane’s 2026 Ballon d’Or victory, highlighting how the award continues to evolve while honouring its storied past. For Ronaldo, this latest recognition ensures that his 2008 season will be remembered not only as a turning point in his career but also as the greatest Ballon d’Or campaign of all time.
