Club and player issue apologies after meme remark sparks backlash.

Real Madrid have acted swiftly to contain the fallout from Kylian Mbappé’s controversial comments about a meme referencing a Chinese dictator, issuing a formal apology to fans in China. The Spanish giants expressed regret over the incident and emphasised their respect for China’s history, culture, and millions of supporters worldwide.

The controversy began when Mbappé, in a light-hearted exchange, referenced a meme that superimposed his face onto the body of Mao Zedong, the founding leader of the People’s Republic of China. Although he did not explicitly name Mao, the reference was widely understood and quickly drew criticism across Chinese social media, where jokes about Mao remain highly sensitive.

Responding to the backlash, Mbappé issued a statement admitting his remarks were “ill-judged” and apologising to those offended. “I now understand that my words hurt many people in China and in Chinese communities around the world. This was never my intention. I have deep respect for the Chinese people and their history, and I am sincerely sorry,” he said.

Real Madrid echoed his apology, noting that the player’s remarks may have caused discomfort. “Our club holds deep respect for China, its history, its culture, and its citizens, as well as for the millions of Chinese fans who feel affection and admiration for Real Madrid,” the statement read. The club reaffirmed its commitment to respect and cultural understanding and pledged to strengthen ties with China.

The repercussions have extended beyond social media outrage. Three major Chinese companies – Eastroc Beverage, Mengniu Dairy, and Shanghai Milkground Food Tech – announced they were ending their sponsorship deals with Mbappé. Meanwhile, China Media Group suspended broadcasts of LaLiga matches and advertisements featuring the French forward, raising concerns about the league’s broader relationship with Chinese audiences.

LaLiga has also expressed regret, underscoring the seriousness of the situation for Spanish football’s standing in one of its most important international markets. For Real Madrid, the incident highlights the delicate balance global clubs must maintain when engaging with diverse fan bases across cultures.

As the dust settles, both Mbappé and Real Madrid are working to rebuild trust and reaffirm their respect for Chinese supporters. It remains uncertain whether these apologies will be enough to restore commercial partnerships and broadcasting ties, but the episode reminds us of the global scrutiny that accompanies football’s biggest stars.
