Japan struggling with Tropical Storm Mawar

Tropical Storm Mawar and a seasonal rain front dumped torrential rain across much of Japan, forcing authorities to issue damage warnings.

According to news agency Reuters, many passengers were stuck when railway services were interrupted, and one person died due to the storm.

Storm Mawar has been downgraded to a typhoon, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Japan’s weather agency has warned residents to watch for landslides, surging rivers, and flooding in the east. Landslides have been reported in western Japan.

Will Tropical Storm Mawar affect Japan?

According to Reuters, up to 7,000 families in the eastern and western areas were still without power, although restoration work was underway, according to the industry ministry.

Since Friday, Shinkansen bullet trains from Tokyo to Nagoya in central Japan have been suspended. The trains have already resumed service, according to Kyodo news agency.

Authorities advised over a million people to flee from parts of Japan due to severe rain. A huge number of flights have been cancelled.

The weather was predicted to get better in most of Japan later on Saturday, according to official broadcaster NHK, after heavy rain fell in various parts of the country from Friday until Saturday morning. According to Kyodo, this was the heaviest June rainfall in several places.
