India reports over 20,000 cases in a single day;
death toll crosses 16000.
On Sunday, Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav
Thackeray announced
that the lockdown curbs in the state would continue beyond 30th of June. In a
televised address, Thackeray highlighted that the state is still facing the Coronavirus threat and ruled out any easing of the
restrictions. The Maharashtra CM tweeted,” Will the lockdown be lifted after
June 30? The clear answer is no.” Thackeray, in his address, stated that the Mission
Begin Again,
(Maharashtra’s version of the Unlock process) was being gradually implemented
to put the ailing economy back on track. Thackeray revealed that there would be
more relaxation offered gradually, but there will also be some strict
restrictions post 30 June.
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra also said that the Covid-19 pandemic is still on a high surge in the state and stringent discipline is to be maintained to contain the spread of the virus. He said,” The crisis is not yet over. We can’t leave the war halfway in the final phase. Mission Begin Again may result in more cases, but the number of tests have also increased.” Thackeray urged the people of the state to actively cooperate with the government to ensure that lockdown is not re-imposed.
Thackeray further revealed that the Maha VikasAgadi government is more focused on restarting education rather than reopening schools. The state witnessed its biggest spike in the number of cases as it reported 6368 cases in a single day. The Covid-19 tally of Maharashtra stands at 159,133 infections with 7273 causalities.

On Saturday, India registered fresh 20,060 infections, the
biggest on a single-day, to take the country’s coronavirus tally to 529,533
cases. The death toll crossed the 16000-mark and stands at 16,095 in
the country as per the Union Health Ministry’s data.
