Mild tremors shake Gujarat’s Kutch; no damage reported

Kutch: The ISR stated in its recent report that the tremor was recorded at 12:41 p.m. and had an epicentre approximately 12 kilometres north-northeast (NNW) of Bhachau.

Twin Tremors Recorded on Sunday

The Kutch district of Gujarat experienced two mild tremors on Sunday, according to data released by the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR).

The first tremor, measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 6:41 a.m. with its epicentre located 24 km east-southeast of Dholavira. Later in the afternoon, another tremor of 3.1 magnitude struck the same district.

Authorities Confirm No Casualties or Damage

District disaster management officials confirmed that no damage to life or property has been reported from either tremor. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have assured residents that there is no cause for immediate alarm.

Kutch: A Seismically Sensitive Zone

Kutch district is situated in a “very high risk” seismic zone, making it prone to frequent low-intensity earthquakes. Minor tremors are recorded in the region regularly, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and preparedness. Experts note that such mild quakes often act as reminders of the region’s vulnerability to larger seismic events.

Historical Context: The 2001 Tragedy

The mild tremors inevitably bring back memories of the devastating 2001 Kutch earthquake, which was the third largest and second most destructive earthquake in India over the last two centuries.

That catastrophic event caused near-total destruction across several towns and villages, claiming around 13,800 lives and leaving over 1.67 lakh people injured. It also resulted in widespread loss of property and long-term socio-economic impact on the region.

Preparedness and Public Advisory

Officials have reiterated the importance of earthquake preparedness in vulnerable districts like Kutch. Citizens are advised to remain alert, follow safety protocols during tremors, and avoid panic. Disaster management teams remain on standby to respond to any eventuality.

While Sunday’s quakes were minor and did not cause damage, they serve as a reminder of the seismic fragility of Gujarat’s Kutch region and the importance of community awareness and resilience.
