Kamala Harris made
her maiden speech as the presumptive 2020 Democratic vice-presidential
candidate in Wilmington, Delaware on Wednesday. Harris, in the speech, said
that it would be great to have the title ‘vice president’ to her name but “Momala” will always be the one that means the most to her.
Kamala Harris says being called
“Momala” means the most:
Along with US Presidential candidate Joe Biden, Harris made her speech and weaved her personal story into the broader narrative of why she and Biden should win the race for the White House. The 55-year-old opened up about her family and revealed about her amazing stepchildren, Cole and Ella. Harris for a Mother’s Day edition of Elle magazine had said that her lawyer-husband Doug Emhoff’s kids from his first marriage started calling her “Momala”, just 18 months into their relationship. She got married in 2014. Harris said,” My family means everything to me. I have had a lot of titles in my career, and certainly, the vice president will be great. But “Momala” will always be the one that means the most.”
Joe Biden says Kamala Harris
knows what it means to grow up as a Black, Indian-American in the US:
Remembering an incident that
Harris had shared with him, Joe Biden said that during Harris’ campaign for the
primary, she talked about the 3.00 am agenda, where moms and dads lay awake at
night, worried, scared, uncertain as to how they were going to take care of
their families and about how they were going to make it. Biden said that being
the child of immigrants, Harris knows how immigrant families enrich the US, and
the challenges of what it means to grow up as Black and Indian-American in the
USA. Harris and Biden reasoned as to why they should form the country’s next
administration instead of President Donald Trump.
