MS Dhoni Stays On As CSK Player Under New Coach

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have put an end to speculation about MS Dhoni’s next role at the franchise, confirming that the veteran wicketkeeper will continue as a player rather than step into a coaching or mentoring position. The clarification comes after the team appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as its new head coach, replacing Stephen Fleming, who exited the role a few months ago by mutual agreement.

Franchise Confirms Dhoni’s Playing Status

With Fleming’s departure, several reports speculated that Dhoni, long regarded as CSK’s tactical backbone, might transition into a formal mentoring or leadership role behind the scenes. However, CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan dismissed these claims on Monday, telling The Indian Express plainly that Dhoni “is available as a player.” This confirms that despite his experience and influence within the franchise, Dhoni’s immediate future lies on the field rather than in the coaching setup alongside Zaheer Khan.

A Season to Forget, and a Fresh Start Ahead

Dhoni’s continued playing status comes against the backdrop of a difficult IPL 2026 campaign for CSK. Injuries kept him out of action for most of the season, and the five-time champions endured a disappointing run, finishing eighth in the standings. Notably, Dhoni reportedly stayed away from the team’s iconic home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, in a deliberate effort to keep the spotlight on the franchise’s younger players rather than on himself.

With Zaheer Khan now steering the coaching staff, CSK will be hoping to rebuild and mount a stronger challenge in IPL 2027, with Dhoni’s on-field experience and decision-making expected to remain a valuable asset for the franchise during the transition.
