Sudanese Military Aircraft Crashes: At Least 19 Dead in Tragic Incident

A Sudanese military aircraft crashed in Omdurman city, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 19 people, according to military and health officials on Wednesday, February 26. The crash involved both military personnel and civilians. While the cause of the crash has not been disclosed, the Sudanese military confirmed that the Antonov aircraft, which took off from the Wadi Sayyidna airbase north of Omdurman, crashed on Tuesday, February 24.

The Sudanese Ministry of Health reported that the death toll stands at a minimum of 19 people, with their bodies sent to Omdurman’s Nau Hospital for further processing. Additionally, five civilians were injured in the accident and are currently receiving medical treatment.

This incident comes amid the ongoing civil conflict in Sudan, which has been escalating since 2023. The Sudanese Army and the notorious paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), have been engaged in a violent power struggle. The fighting has particularly devastated urban areas, including the Darfur region, with widespread ethnic violence and horrific events like mass rape and killings. The United Nations and international human rights organizations have condemned these actions, labeling them as crimes against humanity and war crimes.

The situation in Sudan has become increasingly dire, with the military stepping up its offensive against the RSF in Khartoum and other regions. The RSF controls much of western Darfur, and on February 23, 2025, the group claimed responsibility for downing a Sudanese military aircraft in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur. These incidents continue to worsen the crisis, posing a serious threat to civilian safety and the stability of the country.

Sudan’s ongoing conflict has led to a humanitarian catastrophe, with millions displaced and a significant loss of life.
