On January 9, 2022, India added 1.79 lakh COVID-19 cases

On Sunday, the number of COVID-19 cases increased by 1,79,339, bringing India’s total number of active patients to over seven lakh.

The recent sharp increase was primarily due to increased cases in urban areas such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chennai.

Between January 4 and 8, Mumbai recorded over 86,000 cases, a 150 percent increase in infections over the previous week. Delhi recorded approximately 68,000 new cases, a 350% increase. Bengaluru recorded nearly 24,000 cases, a 400 percent increase. In the same period, Chennai saw 17,247 infections, a 350% increase over the previous week.

In the 24 hours ending Sunday morning, Andhra Pradesh reported 1,257 COVID-19 infections and two deaths. Since October 1, 2021, the single-day total has surpassed 1,000 for the first time in 101 days. The positivity rate was also the highest in the previous 180 days, at 3.27 percent.

However, in just five days, the number of active cases tripled from 1,848 on January 5 to 4,774 on Sunday.

There were 12,311 active cases in Bihar as of January 8, with over 7,000 in Patna district. More than 350 doctors or medical personnel in the state have tested positive, most of whom work at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital. In addition, some employees of a private airline stationed at the Patna airport tested positive.

The number of cases in Gujarat increased by 6,275, while 1,263 patients recovered. As a result, the number of active instances approached 28,000, with 26 patients on ventilator support.

Kerala reported 6,238 new cases on Sunday, with 54,108 samples tested in the previous 24 hours. The number of patients in the state’s active case pool has risen to 34,902, with 2,538 people being treated in hospitals across the state for moderate or severe COVID. Between January 2-8, new cases increased by 82 percent over the previous week.

On Sunday, there were 261 new hospitalizations in Kerala, while 2,390 people were reported to have recovered from the disease.
