Daily Covid-19 cases increased by 21% in 24 hours, as India recorded more than 1.4 lakh new infections on Friday.

Just a day after the daily tally surpassed one lakh for the first time in seven months.

Late Friday night, the nationwide case count stood at 1,41,525, with data from two smaller states still pending. There were 1,17,067 cases detected the day before. Cases have rise by more than 20% on all 11 days except one since the surge began on December 28. On four of these days, daily growth rates exceeded 40%, and on two occasions, they exceeded 55%.

In the early hours of Saturday, Delhi and its surrounding areas experienced heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Satyendar Jain, Delhi’s health minister, said the city is likely to report 17,000 Covid cases on Friday, while Mumbai’s daily case count is expected to be around 21,000 on Friday.
