Over 1.4 lakh new Covid cases were reported in a single day
Daily Covid-19 cases increased by 21% in 24 hours, as India recorded more than 1.4 lakh new infections on Friday.
Just a day after the daily tally surpassed one lakh for the first time in seven months.
Late Friday night, the nationwide case count stood at 1,41,525, with data from two smaller states still pending. There were 1,17,067 cases detected the day before. Cases have rise by more than 20% on all 11 days except one since the surge began on December 28. On four of these days, daily growth rates exceeded 40%, and on two occasions, they exceeded 55%.

On Friday, Delhi reported a massive increase in Covid-19 cases, with 17,335 new infections and nine deaths. However, the city’s positivity rate has also risen to 17.73 percent.

At the peak of the Omicron surge, Mumbai could see 30,000 to 60,000 cases per day (7-day average). While Delhi could see 35,000 to 70,000 cases per day. According to the projection model, the peak period for Delhi, Mumbai, and India will be January 15-20. At its peak, the hospital bed requirement in Delhi is estimate to be 12,000, while in Mumbai it could be 10,000.
