Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled a new division, Meta Enterprise Platform, designed to transform the company’s artificial intelligence capabilities into enterprise‑grade products. To lead this ambitious initiative, Zuckerberg has recruited Chirantan “CJ” Desai, who steps down as MongoDB’s chief executive after less than a year in the role. Desai will serve as Chief Enterprise Platform Officer, reporting directly to Zuckerberg, in what is seen as a strategic move to position Meta against rivals such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.
Desai’s sudden exit from MongoDB triggered a sharp decline in the company’s stock, underscoring the impact of his leadership departure. His appointment at Meta reflects Zuckerberg’s intent to make enterprise AI a central pillar of the company’s future growth. In a LinkedIn post, Desai expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, noting that AI will reshape how organizations innovate, serve customers, and manage operations. He emphasized that Meta’s enterprise offerings will prioritize security and privacy from the outset.
A veteran technologist with Indian roots
Born in India and raised in Bengaluru, Desai moved to the United States in 1993 to pursue higher education. He earned a master’s degree in computer science and an MBA from the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign in 1995, overcoming financial challenges with a research assistantship. His career began at Oracle, where he spent seven years working on enterprise software and building offshore operations in India, cementing his early ties to the country’s technology sector.
Over the next three decades, Desai held senior roles at Symantec, EMC, ServiceNow, Cloudflare, and MongoDB, gaining extensive experience in enterprise software, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and product development. At ServiceNow, he rose to president and chief operating officer, while at Cloudflare he led product and engineering. His tenure at MongoDB marked another milestone, though brief, as he succeeded Dev Ittycheria, who has now returned as interim CEO following Desai’s departure.
Meta’s enterprise challenge
Desai’s immediate task at Meta will be to convert its AI research into practical tools for businesses and developers. The enterprise AI market is already crowded, with established players racing to dominate. Zuckerberg’s decision to bring in Desai signals Meta’s determination to compete aggressively, leveraging his proven track record of scaling enterprise technology businesses. For Meta, the move represents not just a leadership change but a bold bet on AI as the company’s next major growth engine.
