Over 18,000 cows killed in a dairy farm explosion in Texas

According to local sources, around 18,000 cows were killed in an explosion at a Texas dairy farm earlier this week.

The blast at South Fork Dairy, Texas around the town of Dimmitt also left one individual in a critical state. Authorities consider that machinery in the structure may have ignited methane gas.

About three million farm animals died in blazes across the US between 2018 and 2021. Castro County Sheriff’s Office stated they had a fire report at the farm at approximately 19:21 on Monday (00:21 GMT Tuesday).

Photos the Sheriff’s Office posted show a massive plume of black smoke rising from the ground.

When cops and emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they saw one person entangled who had to be saved and rushed to a hospital in a critical state.

While the precise figure of cows that were killed by fire and smoke stays unknown, the Sheriff’s Office informed the BBC that an “estimated 18,000 head of cattle” had been lost.

Speaking to the regional news portal KFDA, Sheriff Sal Rivera said that most of the cattle had been lost after the fire spread to where cows were kept before being taken to a milking space and into a holding pen.

“There’s few that survived,” he was mentioned as saying. “Several are probably injured to the point where they’ll have to be killed.”
